It's been a busy couple weeks with Custom Fittings in the Fitting Centre, we've seen a variety of irons and woods fitted including Mizuno, Callaway, TaylorMade, Cobra and PING. Throughout this year I will keep you updated with Custom Fittings and testimonials from members and visitors we have done and how new equipment has performed against older equipment.
Last week, Rob Tait (1 h'cap) came for a fitting for a new set of irons, Rob is a traditional golfer who doesn't like to change his equipment, if it isn't broken then don't fix it! Rob has used a set of Callaway X14 Pro Series Irons for about 12 years and they have worked really well. We gave Rob a custom fitting for a set of Mizuno irons, he wanted the feel of a forged club but with new technology and forgiveness, I got him of the GC2 Launch Monitor and recorded his specs and details from his own clubs, we used a 6 iron for the Fitting. We spent an hour going through the fitting process and tested several different shafts and heads until we found the best set-up for Rob, below are his before and after Launch Monitor numbers:
Callaway X14 Pro Series - Ball Speed: 113mph, Spin Rate: 5597, Carry Distance: 158 yards
Mizuno JPX Forged - Ball Speed: 125 mph, Spin Rate: 5500, Carry Distance: 181 yards
As you can see from the numbers we have made significant improvements, the Ball Speed has increased on average 12 mph, Spin Rate has stayed identical but the Carry Distance has increased by 23 yards on average with a 6 iron!!
This week, Nigel Furniss (4 h'cap) had a fitting for a new driver, he has been using an Exotics 9.5* driver with a Stiff shaft which weighted about 60grams. We specially looked at the Taylormade M1 Driver for this fitting.
I found with the way Nigel swings the club his current driver shaft was too light and this caused an inconsistent ball flight and created far too much spin on the ball, the ideal spin rate we are looking for is between 2000-2500rpm. We tried several different weighted shafts and found the Aldila Rogue 70 Stiff shaft to be perfect for him, this weights 78 grams and is designed to launch the ball low with low spin, the numbers below show his old driver compared to the new Taylormade M1:
Exotics 9.5* - Ball Speed: 128mph, Spin Rate: 3764, Carry Distance: 199 yards
TaylorMade M1 10.5* - Ball Speed: 130mph, Spin Rate: 2443, Carry Distance: 216 yards
You can see from the numbers that we have marginally increased ball speed by 2mph on average, but more importantly the Spin Rate has decreased by over 1300rpm which has resulted in an extra carry gain of 17 yards on average and a much more penetrating flight.
If you want to make improvements to your game and make it more enjoyable with distance gains of 23 yards then get yourself booked in for a Custom Fitting.
