Cameron Young was simply unbeatable this weekend when he took to the Blue Monster at Doral golf course for the annual Cadillac Championship. With water hazards on 14 out of 18 holes, this Floridian track is truly a beast, and not for the faint-hearted.
Cam Young was up to the challenge however and carded a flawless 64 out of the gate on the Thursday that set him up for staying at the hot end of the leaderboard all tournament long. Come the end of the Saturday, he was holding a commanding 6-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler.
The U.S. Ryder Cup team-member started his final round with a comfortable poise, carding birdies on the 3rd, 5th, and 8th holes. The first sign of pressure started to show when he dropped shots on the 11th and 13th holes but quickly recovered with consecutive birdies on 15 and 16.
Not only was he seemingly unflappable all tournament long, Young demonstrated a fine example of good sportsmanship when he happened to move his ball during the backswing of his approach shot on the 2nd hole “Your heart sinks when you see it move. But it moved. That’s part of what golf’s about. There’s no one who’s going to give me a penalty there but myself.”
It was Young’s second win of the year following his victory at The Players Championship in March. He also became the first wire-to-wire winner at the Doral since Hubert Green in 1976. Giving a fascinating insight into his mentality going into tournaments, Young claimed that being faced with a difficult course such as this one helps him lock in and focus on his performance “When the golf course is difficult, when the conditions are difficult, that tends to make it easier for me mentally.”
With a handful of tour wins now under his belt as well as having represented his country at the Ryder Cup, the next natural focus for Young is to win a major, and with the PGA Championship taking place in a matter of days now, he’s in fine form to try his hand at claiming the Wanamaker Trophy.
